It is often described as a type of psychosis which means the person may not always be able to distinguish their own thoughts and ideas from reality. There are effective treatments for schizophrenia and people affected by it can lead a productive life and be integrated in society.

Dementia is a syndrome – usually of a chronic or progressive nature – in which there is deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. the ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from normal ageing. It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. Consciousness is not affected. The impairment in cognitive function is commonly accompanied, and occasionally preceded, by deterioration in emotional control, social behaviour, or motivation.

I read this study report published in The Lancet in 2012, but which continues to remain relevant today so I share it here. The report concludes that 'a lack of exercise is now causing as many deaths as smoking across the world'. Through this widely respected peer-reviewed medical journal, we continue to be reminded how important exercising our bodies everyday is if we are to remain healthy into our older years.
