Exploring Medical Missions Conference

Since 2006 the annual INMED Exploring Medical Missions Conference continues to be a premier opportunity for students and professionals to enhance their sense of calling and their skills on behalf of the world's most marginalized people.

Previous Conference themes have examined the Fight Against HIV, Launching Into Medical Missions, Fighting The Diseases of Poverty, Serving The Forgotten, and From Rescue To Resilience, and From Inspiration To Mobilization. 552 enthusiastic individuals and 26 sending organizations participated in the 2012 Conference.

Conference Theme

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both?" opens the Robert Frost poem The Road Not Taken. In parallel, today's healthcare professionals enjoy abundant career choices. A minority select service to the world's most marginalized people. The 2013 INMED Exploring Medical Missions Conference exposes the heartfelt need of the forgotten, celebrates action of their behalf, and challenges us to join this journey. Frost concludes, "...I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."

Who Are The Speakers?

Featured speakers at the event will include:
  • David Nasser was raised in Iran as a sophisticated, educated Muslim. A privileged child, David had visited every continent by the time he was a nine-year old. But then struck the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the taking of American hostages at the Iranian Embassy in Tehran, and the persecution of moderate Muslims throughout that nation....For this terrified teen, the destructive power of religion and the trauma of prejudice inspired a compelling search for value and meaning, culminating in his discovery that peace and self-worth are only found in a personal relationship with the Messiah.
  • Paul Bauer, MD, is a pediatric intensive care physician at Children's Mercy Hospital.
  • Nancy Crigger, PhD, ARNP, is an associate professor of nursing at Graceland University
  • Jean Fields, RN, MSN, CNS, is a nurse educator teaching community health nursing at the Research College of Nursing.
  • James Fyffe, RN, is on staff at North Kansas City Hospital.
  • Peter Greenspan, MD, is Associate Chairman, Department of OB-GYN, Truman Medical Center-Lakewood and Assistant Professor, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
  • Ted Higgins, MD, is a general and vascular surgeon at Research Medical Center.

Is Continuing Education Credit Available?

  • Physicians: Institute for International Medicine is accredited by the Missouri State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
    Institute for International Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 8.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of the participation in the activity.
  • Nurses: Truman Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Missouri Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
    8 continuing nursing education hours (contact hours) may be awarded if participants attend all continuing education sessions of this program.
  • Dentists: Continuing Education Credit is available for dentists.
  • Physical Therapists: Continuing Education Credit is available for physical therapists.

Conference cost

Participants will receive admission to the conference, lunch on Friday, and a certificate of attendance.
